A Hungry Nation

  • HIV/AIDS is a contributor to the hunger problem. Stephen Lewis, the UN special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, says that 20 million people in Africa have already lost their lives to the disease and 30 million more are infected with the virus.

Of those who presently have the disease, their immune systems are so weak they can no longer work in the fields, increasing the malnutrition and death rate of their families and communities whom they support.

  • This health tragedy has decimated whole adult populations of food producers and income providers.

In this way, HIV/AIDS fractures the whole society, affecting hunger as well as other issues.
  • In addition, the effects of HIV/AIDS seriously degrades the traditional support systems in the village and the family/village/clan relationships that earlier served communities in times of crisis.

To be infected with the disease is often not discussed or recognized, for fear of being ostracized or shunned by their community. A wide variety of superstitions are also associated with HIV/AIDS.
